THE HUMAN-ANIMAL BOND
Celebrating the Human–Animal Bond on the Outer Banks
The bond between people and their pets is powerful, personal, and deeply rooted in daily life across the Outer Banks. Pets are more than companions—they are family members who offer comfort, routine, protection, and unconditional love. This human–animal bond strengthens our emotional well-being, supports mental health, and brings a sense of stability during both joyful and difficult times.
For many families, pets are a constant presence through life’s changes. They greet us at the door, sit quietly beside us, and offer comfort without judgment. In return, pet owners do everything they can to keep their animals healthy and safe. Yet for some Outer Banks families, rising veterinary costs and unexpected medical needs can threaten that bond.
At Coastal Humane Society, preserving the human–animal bond is at the heart of everything we do. Since 1997, we have worked to ensure that no one is forced to give up or compromise a pet’s care due to financial hardship. Through vaccination clinics, spay and neuter assistance, emergency veterinary care, and medical support, we help remove barriers that can separate pets from the people who love them.
When communities invest in keeping pets and people together, everyone benefits. Pets stay healthier. Families stay whole. And the Outer Banks remains a place where compassion and connection are part
of who we are.
Together, by supporting one another, we continue to strengthen the bond between pets and their people—today and for generations to come.
